Shelby LaRae Mellen, 88, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2023, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. She was born on August 1, 1935, in Tooele, Utah the daughter of Walter and Ethel (Proctor) Formo. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) for many years, providing comfort and support to those in need. However, her most cherished role in life was that of a wife and mother. Shelby poured her heart and soul into raising her ten children and creating a loving home for them.
Shelby had a colorful personality that brought laughter to those around her. She had a funny sense of humor that could lighten any room. Shelby's passion for gardening brought beauty and tranquility to her surroundings. In moments of relaxation, she enjoyed playing canasta and solitaire, challenging herself with intricate puzzles, and listening to music.
Shelby completed her high school education in Tooele, Utah in 1953. Shelby leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will forever be cherished by those who knew her. She is survived by nine children: Deborah, Denise, Michael, Steven, Matthew, Timothy Kathleen, Sarah, Daniel and their families. Additionally, Shelby leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will carry her memory in their hearts.
Shelby is preceded in death by her husband (Richard), parents (Walter and Ethel), siblings (George “Bill”, Paula “Leanne” and Barry), daughter (Suzanne), grandson (William) and great-granddaughter (Ava).
To honor and celebrate the life of Shelby LaRae Mellen, visitation will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee, Minnesota on October 13, 2023. The visitation will be 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Following the visitation, a Memorial Service will be held at the same location starting at 10:00 AM. The final resting place for Shelby will be Sacred Heart Cemetery in Frazee, Minnesota.
