Opal H. Stordahl, age 84, of Vergas, MN, formerly of Moorhead, MN, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Frazee Care Center, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Loon Lake. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Loon Lake with a prayer service to take place at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will take place at St. Paul's Loon Lake Cemetery at a later date.
Opal was born September 15, 1928, at Erskine, MN. She was the youngest of 5 children born to Ole G. & Hilma (Gran) Olson. Opal grew up in Erskine and graduated from Erskine High School with the class of 1946. Following high school, Opal attended beauty school in Fargo, ND. She worked as a beautician in Erskine for a year and Crookston, MN for three years.
Opal was united in marriage to Emery Stordahl on June 23, 1951, at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine. Four children were born to the marriage: Patricia, Robert, Mark & Todd. The family made their home in Moorhead, MN, where Opal enjoyed caring for her family. She loved to cook, and bake, especially her family's favorite, her homemade cream puffs. She also enjoyed her flower gardens during the summer months. In her later years, she learned hardanger embroidery, which she was very skilled at. She embroidered many special pieces for her family and friends. Opal was active in the LWML at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Moorhead and later, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Loon Lake.
In 1982, the couple moved to Spirit Lake near Vergas, MN, where they lived and enjoyed the lake for nearly 10 years. Eventually, the couple bought a home near Long Lake in Vergas where they enjoyed retirement.
Opal is survived by her husband of 61 years, Emery Stordahl of Vergas; 4 children: Patricia (Duane) Strand of Detroit Lakes, MN, Robert (Jeri) Stordahl of Pelican Rapids, MN, Mark (Maurina) Stordahl of Lincoln, NE, and Todd (Patricia) Stordahl of Glenwood, MN; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Opal in death were her parents and 4 siblings.
Memorials are preferred to Red River Valley Hospice and St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Loon Lake.
