Mildred Tangen

Mildred Margaret (Leske) Tangen, 96, of Menahga, MN, died Thursday, February 9, 2017 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, MN.

Funeral service will be held 11a.m., Monday, February 13, 2017, at Furey Funeral Home in Frazee, MN. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, February 12, 2017, at Furey Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial will be made at Spruce Grove Cemetery in rural Frazee.

Mildred was born in Perham, MN on July 22, 1920 to Henry and Ida (Redetzke) Leske. She married Chester Tangen on June 16, 1938. Mildred & Chester lived and owned the farm adjoining the original homestead that was settled by Chester's grandfather, Christopher Tangen. Her parents, Henry & Ida, owned the farm across the road. She lived on that "mile" for the first 90 years of her life.

Her passion was cooking, baking and canning. Baking included all types of cookies, cakes, apple pies, caramel rolls & jelly rolls. Her breads & frostings were always from scratch. Her canning included all kinds of pickles, beets, peaches, pears, & applesauce. She also loved working in her flower gardens. Besides all the lilac bushes, she had hollyhocks, morning glories, dahlias of all colors & sizes, and then she filled in with annuals that made for very colorful gardens. She also loved doing needlework and sewing. There isn't a sister, niece, daughter-in-law, granddaughter or dear friends that have not received her handmade hot pads or a set of flour sack towels embroidered with the days of the week.

Most important to Mildred was her faith. She showed it through her service to others. Every week, sometimes twice a week she visited the homebound, the sick and the lonely. She would bake something and then share food, time and conversation with whoever she went to care for. Mildred was a member of her faith for her entire life.

Mildred's family includes three sons and their families. Darwin (Loretta) Tangen, Jerome (Carol) Tangen, Darrell (Gayle) Tangen. Her grandchildren are Tammy Tangen, Tony (Kathy Blakeman) Tangen, Laurie Hoscheid Rengel and Jeffrey (Michelle) Hoscheid. Great-grandchildren are Sydney Tangen, Katherine Rengel, John Rengel, Madison Novy-Hoscheid, Dylan Hoscheid and Derek Hoscheid.

She was preceded in death by her husband Chester, her son James, her parents, two brothers and three sisters.
