Leo R. Janu, age 76, of rural Frazee, MN, passed away Friday, August 24, 2012, at his home, with his family at his side, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee, MN. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m., Monday, August 27, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a rosary to take place at 7 p.m. and a prayer service to follow. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Leo was born February 26, 1936, the eldest of 9 children born to Eutychius and Mary Ann (Tuna) Janu at Breckenridge, Minnesota. The family moved to Fargo, ND, and then out to the farm in rural Frazee, MN in 1947.
Leo was united in marriage to Cecelia VanWatermulen on September 15, 1960, at the Butler church. The couple made their home at Detroit Lakes, MN, until 1966 when they moved to rural Frazee. The union was blessed with 6 children: Kim, Karen, Kay, Keith, Kurt and Karla.
Prior to his marriage to Cecelia, Leo drove truck for Luce Concrete. He continued his career in trucking and drove for the Frazee Elevator, Lakeland Turkey, and then moving cattle for Nistler Truck Line. Eventually, he retired from Evensons Trucking out of Pelican Rapids, MN.
They bought his Dad's farm in 1976, where the family raised cattle, farmed, raised a produce truck garden and owned and operated Janu Pumkin Patch. During retirement, Leo enjoyed wood crafts and worked with garden produce. He also enjoyed the outdoors, especially when he was deer hunting.
Leo was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be dearly missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Cecelia of rural Frazee; 6 children: Kim (Harold) Weiss of Erhard, MN, Karen (Dominic) Johnson of Cibolo, TX, Kay (Bruce) Nelson of Frazee, MN, Keith (Beth) Janu of Frazee, MN, Kurt (Shelly) Janu of Detroit Lakes, MN and Karla (Jeff) Sazama of Frazee; 14 grandchildren: Misty (Darin) Rux, Virginia Beckwith, Toni (Travis) Tennison, Stacy (Josh) Holt, Brandon Johnson, Christopher (Tiffany) Nelson, Nicholas and Kaylah Nelson, Daniel and Whitney Janu, Keisha, Brady, Sasha and Logan Sazama; 7 great grandchildren: Emily, Jordan, Garrett, Jayden, Janessa, Jackson and Emma; 4 sisters: Ann (Donald) Quittschreiber of Frazee, Bernadette (Vernon) Quittschreiber of Frazee, Mae (Boyd) Engle of St. Cloud, MN and Carol (David) Nunn of Menahga, MN; and 2 brothers: Ronald (Sara) Janu of CA and Daniel (Diane) Janu of Perham, MN; along with many nieces and nephews.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, E.J. and Mary; and 2 sisters: Nona and Patty.
