Gunnar Helland , age 102, died Monday, July 13 at the Frazee Care Center.
Gunnar Helland was born March 18, 1907 in Aalgaard, Norway to Inga and Nils Helland. He graduated from school in Norway and attended the Hall of Mechanics there before immigrating to the United States in 1930. He first worked at a ranch in Montana before moving to the Detroit Lakes area.
On June 4, 1938 Gunnar was united in marriage to Mamie Martinson, and they made their home on a farm near Richwood, where they raised their two children.
As a young man, Gunnar was well-known in the area for his sheep-shearing talent which kept him very busy in the spring. In addition to farming, Gunnar worked construction. Mamie passed away in February 15, 1968.
Gunnar married Irene Cusey at the Methodist Church in Detroit Lakes on August 24, 1984 at which time he moved into Detroit Lakes.
Gunnar's chief enjoyments included dancing, flee marketing, gardening and being needed by others. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his family and friends, and playing with his great-grandchildren.
Gunnar's life, love and sense of humor will be missed by his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, his first wife of 29 years and his second wife of 15 years. He is survived by his son Marcelyn (Kathleen) Helland, daughter Glenice (Jon) Hall, stepson David (Becky) Cusey, stepdaughter Kareen (Bob) Pfeifer, grandchildren: Marc Helland, Forrest Helland, Wade Helland, Craig (Christine) Hall and Amie (Kyle) Erickson, six great-grandchildren: Wesley, Olivia, Gunnar, Ellie, Jack and Jessie, three nieces and one nephew.
A service of celebration of his life will be held at 11 AM Friday, July 17 at Richwood Lutheran Church. In lieu flowers memorials can be sent to either Richwood Lutheran Church, Attn.
