Florence Lavere (Strelau) Soland, 80, of rural Vergas, MN, died suddenly on Saturday, September 17, 2011 near her home.
Florence was born September 7, 1931 to Friedrick and Hulda (Sonnenberg) Strelau in rural Vergas, MN. She was raised in rural Dent, MN, and graduated from Perham High School in 1949. Florence was baptized September 27, 1931, and was confirmed in 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dent, MN. Florence was united in marriage to Wenzel "Bub" Soland on April 20, 1952, in Dent and raised four children in their rural Vergas home. Wenzel and Florence farmed, raising dairy cows and later owned and operated a mink ranch.
Florence enjoyed the beautiful things in life, everything from flowers to quilting, to cooking, to the vegetables she grew each year in her large garden. That being said, she was the first to get her hands dirty with her family: cleaning fish and having fish fries at "The Point" on Sybil Lake, digging in her garden, or potting flowers. She seemed to find the perfect balance in life between putting in a hard day's work to creating the pretty, delicate and meaningful things in life.
She is survived by her husband Wenzel, four children: Bruce of Vergas, MN, Barbara (Charles) Hanson of Fergus Falls, MN, Brenda (Robert) McDonald of Detroit Lakes, MN and Bryan (Jean) of Vergas, MN; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Della Andrews of Chula Vista, CA and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father Friederick Strelau, her mother Hulda (Sonnenberg) (Strelau) Almberg, her stepfather Rudy Almberg, her sister Viola (Lee) and many aunts and uncles. She will be dearly missed by all family and friends.
The funeral services for Florence will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2011, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Loon Lake in rural Vergas, MN. Visitation will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Loon Lake on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be at the church cemetery following the funeral service.
