Don Schermerhorn

Donald "Don" Darrell Schermerhorn, age 85, of Frazee, MN, passed away peacefully, surrounded in love, on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m., Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with a prayer service to be held at 6:30. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday. Burial will be made at Lakeside Cemetery, Frazee, following the service.

Don was born August 19, 1931, in Brocket, ND, to Elray and Emma (White) Schermerhorn. Don and his family lived on a farm near Crystal, ND, for 9 years, then moving to Dixon, Ill. for 7 years, eventually making their home on a farm near Vergas, MN. Don graduated from Frazee High School with the class of 1951.

Don married Charleen Rein on August 31, 1952. The couple made their home near Frazee and were blessed with 3 children: JoDee, Christy and Scot. Don served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1954. In 1961, Don began his career at KCMT TV where he worked as a sales account executive for more than 40 years.

Don played fast-pitch softball for many years and it was his family's entertainment. Don was an avid hunter and loved ice fishing. Two of Don's favorite pastimes were watching Minnesota sports and reading westerns. He loved the Montana Mountains and visiting their cabin south of Billings, MT. His dog, Schultz, was his faithful companion. He loved animals and working on his hobby farm and in his garden.

Don enjoyed his daily workouts at the PACC and was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee.

Don was a humble man who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He found his greatest joy in his family and loved the time he spent with them.

Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Charleen of Frazee; children: JoDee (Ken) Yachechak of Bigfork, MT, Christy (Ross) Mickelson of Frazee, and Scot Schermerhorn of Columbia Falls, MT; 4 grandchildren: Holly (Mike) Hagen of Moorhead, MN, Heath (Rachel) Mickelson of Madison, WI, Jessica Schermerhorn of Missoula, MT and Zachary Schermerhorn of Bozeman, MT; 4 great grandchildren: Keilah, Brekken, Taylor and Lauren; sister, Dona Mae Hanson of Vergas; sister-in-law, Elaine Schermerhorn of Perham, MN; sister in law, Patt (Don) Wagner of Detroit Lakes, MN; along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Don in death were his parents; brother, Allen Schermerhorn; and son-in-law, John Jasiukiewicz.
