Cathy Berg, age 67, of Toad Lake, MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at Perham Living, Perham, MN, following a valiant three year battle with esophageal cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 18, 2015, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Snellman, MN, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at the cemetery in Syre, MN at a future date.
Catherine Marie Reed was born November 10, 1947, in Minneapolis, MN, to Ned and Florence (Beers) Reed. She grew up in Minneapolis, graduating in 1965 from North High School. She then attended Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1968.
Cathy was united in marriage to John Henry Berg in Minneapolis, MN, on March 9, 1968. The couple built their first home in Plato, MN, while Cathy worked as an operating room nurse at Hennepin County General Hospital and later at the hospital in Glencoe, MN. In 1978, the family moved to their farm in Toad Lake, MN, where they raised their four children. While assisting John with the dairy farm, Cathy also spent over 30 years doing what she loved most, nursing at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes, MN. After retirement, the couple enjoyed their time at home on the farm, as well as several years spent in Texas during the winter. They also loved to spend time camping with all their many friends, family and especially their children and grandkids. Cathy enjoyed her many hobbies and spent much time knitting, crocheting, and sewing, which is just a few of the many different things she became passionate about over the years. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed the challenge of a puzzle or Sudoku game. She spent many years involved in local 4-H clubs with her children, while in her later years was a member of the Red Hat Society. Above all, Cathy enjoyed the time she spent with her husband, children and grandchildren. Cathy will be greatly missed by everyone for her wonderful kindness and compassion.
Cathy will be missed most of all by her family. She is survived by husband, John, Toad Lake, MN; children: Christine (Joe) Fargo, ND; Julia (Mike) Bluffton, MN; James (Becky) Frazee, MN; and Alyssa Fargo, ND; and grandchildren Emily (Tyler), Amanda (Dillon), Jacob, Thomas and Christopher.
Cathy was preceded in death by her beloved mother Florence and her special friend Bill, father Ned, brother Robert, father-in-law Judien and mother-in-law Henrietta.
