Althea R. Wirth, age 62, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Frazee, MN, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, MN. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Furey Funeral Home in Frazee. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday.
Althea was born on January 27, 1949 in Detroit Lakes, MN, the eldest of five children born to Cecil and Loretta (Briese) Wirth. Althea grew up on a dairy farm in rural Frazee, MN.
She graduated from Frazee High School in 1967 and served as the class secretary/treasurer. Althea was a member of the National Honor Society. She participated in volleyball, track, Future Homemakers of America and tutored junior high and elementary students. Althea was the first senior to receive a Daggett Scholarship.
Following high school, Althea attended Fergus Falls Junior College and graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree. She then went on to attend Moorhead State College where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. Althea accepted a teaching position with the Moorhead Public Schools in 1971. She was named George Washington Elementary School's "Teacher of the Year" in 1989 and Moorhead Public Schools' "Teacher of the Year" in 1990. A special honor for a very special person. She retired in May 2005 after 34 years of teaching.
She was a member of Education Minnesota, Delta Kappa Gamma, which is an educational sorority, and a member of Altrusa International, a professional women's service organization, where she held several offices.
Althea loved to travel, read, cook, collect antiques, watch movies, spend time outdoors, and talk to people. She especially enjoyed the time she spent with her family and friends. Althea will be dearly missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is survived by one brother, Ron Wirth; two sisters: Deb Wirth and Sharry (Denny) Davis all of Frazee, MN; five nieces and one nephew; two great nieces and eight great nephews.
Althea was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Don Wirth.
